Möller Stephan
Pianist
Biography
Stephan Möller first gained international recognition as a prizewinner at the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna in 1985. Since then, his vibrant concert career has taken him across Europe, the United States, Japan, and China. While he performs a broad range of repertoire, he is particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of the Viennese Classics, especially the works of Ludwig van Beethoven. In celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday in 2020, Möller initiated the global concert project “Beethoven 32×32,” which aimed to present all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in 32 different cities around the world.
Among Möller’s notable recordings are rare pieces such as Beethoven’s Große Fuge for four hands—performed by himself with the aid of a Bösendorfer computer grand piano—as well as the complete original piano works of Richard Wagner. He is currently working on a complete recording of all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas.
Born in Hamburg in 1955, Stephan Möller studied with Peter Heilbut in Hamburg, Kurt Seibert in Bremen, and Hans Leygraf in Salzburg. He completed his artistic training in piano and conducting at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. From 1983 to 1989, he served as artistic assistant to Herbert von Karajan and other world-renowned conductors at the Salzburg Festival. From 1990 to 2020, Möller was a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Since 2020, alongside his active concert career, he has been a lecturer at the Richard Wagner Conservatory in Vienna. He is regularly invited to give lectures and masterclasses and to serve on competition juries both in Austria and internationally. Since 1998, he has served as president of Vienna International Pianists and the successful festival VIP Academy. In 2009, he founded the International Rosario Marciano Piano Competition.
In 2022, he served as a jury member for the international music competition “Sounds of the Land of Fire” held in Vienna.
